Minister Alfred Sears of the Ministry of Immigration and National Insurance, attended the Foreign Ministers and Heads of Delegations meeting with China’s Foreign Minister the Honourable Wang Yi on 12th May, 2025.

The focal point of the meeting involved strengthening relations with China, through continued cooperation in a wide range of sectors to build and sustain economic development. Countries also reaffirmed their commitment to the One China Policy, a significant pillar in China-CELAC relations.

The Chinese government expressed appreciation for the strong support received from the countries in the Caribbean for their stand on continued cooperation with China, and maintaining their independence from the influences of third countries. China pledges to support the continued advanced development of the small island states of the Caribbean. The Bahamas looks forward to closer collaboration with the China International Development Cooperation Agency on Global Development Initiative projects.

The Minister was accompanied by H.E. Ambassador Paulette Bethel and Minister Plenipotentiary Julie Campbell of The Bahamas Embassy in Beijing.

The National Insurance Board Continuing to Work with Staff Union While Improving Efficiency and Managing Administrative Costs The National Insurance Board continues to cooperate in good faith with its staff union, the Union of Public Officers (UPO), to assist the Ministry of the Public Service and National Insurance to conclude negotiations on the new Industrial Agreement in an environment where the Board has to improve its efficiency targets and better manage administrative costs.

On October 7, 2019, the National Insurance Board celebrated 45 years of social security administration in The Bahamas. To commemorate this milestone, NIB has planned a number of community outreach and staff activities. The Board kicked off the celebrations by observing Customer Appreciation Day on October 17th at its offices throughout The Bahamas.

The National Insurance Board (NIB) apologizes to its customers for any disruption in services on Wednesday 23rd October, 2019 experienced at its offices between 10:00 a.m. and 10:15 a.m. when many of its staff members gathered during their tea break to assert grievances with the progress of Industrial Agreement negotiations.

The National Insurance programme was established on December 12, 1972 with the signing into law of the National Insurance Act, 1972. The National Insurance Board (NIB), the organization charged with administering the social security programme, opened its doors officially on October 7, 1974. Its primary mission was and is to provide income-replacement in respect of sickness, invalidity, maternity, retirement, death, industrial injury/disease, and involuntary loss of income.
